When I told my mother that I want to buy a kettle to make tea, her immediate response was, "Don't buy anything on Saturday, it's unlucky." Our lives are full of this 'lucky-unlucky' binary and beliefs whose origins are not known and yet followed for ages now. This is probably why many of us still follow these beliefs without questioning them; while some of us follow these beliefs just to please our mothers.

Just like kettles, sofas, washing machines, refrigerators etc, there is another object which is brought home after assessing whether or not it's 'lucky' enough. That object is 'bahu'; daughter-in-law.

She is not merely a wife to her husband. She is the entire family's 'bahu' and since she is brought home for the entire family, it's important that she is lucky for the household. This is precisely why her photograph is seen before bringing her home. Her facial features should be sharp; her looks, innocent; but above all, she must be fair with pearl-like teeth. That she can be into drugs or have had lovers in the past, are questions that are not even thought about in rural areas even today; forget about accepting such a woman.

Fair, 'beautiful', thin, but not taller than the man; these are the traits of the ideal 'bahu'. A 'bahu' is selected like one would select curtains for drawing rooms. The bahu-to-be will become a human if she starts talking or sharing her dreams. But we want curtains, right? Good quality curtains, with no defects.

YouTube has all kinds of videos. From Lord Ganesh's image emerging out of a tree to a five-headed cobra; from why the vagina is wet to how to increase the size of penis; videos that are no less than soft porn. And then there are some videos that cross all levels of disgust and ugliness. These are the videos that explain the ways to identify 'characterless' women.

Let me tell you, this video doesn't judge women on the basis of their work or habits, which is a common practice (although equally problematic). Rather, it tells of ways to judge women based on their body parts. Like we look at vegetables in the market and decide which one is better. Here's a glimpse of what's in those videos. We won't show the video, but here are excerpts of what's there in the video.

These are the characteristics of a characterless woman:

1.     If the smallest toe of the feet or the one right next to it, doesn't touch the ground. Or if the toe right next to the big toe is longer than the big toe.

2.     If the woman is hotheaded or 'out of control'.

3.     Women with flat stomach are unlucky for husbands; women with broad foreheads for brother-in-law; and women with big hips are unlucky for their father-in-law.

4.     Women with hair in their ears create a ruckus at home.

5.     Big toothed women are always sad.

6.     Women with pale eyes, or dimpled cheeks.

7.     Women with long neck destruct the offspring.

Apart from this, the video talks about the various shapes on women's hands and feet wherein different shapes have different meanings.

It also says:

"A woman's future is largely dependent on their physical symptoms. One cannot say much by looking at women's faces, but a lot can be told by looking at their body parts."

And if you want to know the definition of a good woman according to this video, then it is as follows:

"A woman with a face round as the moon; fair; with pink lips; and long, pointed fingers is a lucky woman. And this is the kind of woman one should marry."

What's more surprising is the fact that their description of a 'good woman' actually fits that of the newspaper advertisements under the 'bride required' section. A slim and fair woman is the only 'good woman' for them. Just like we separate the fleshy, juicy pieces while purchasing meat, similarly, it is suggested to look at the various body parts of a woman to decide whether or not she is good enough.

In an attempt towards their own defense, the video that we are taking about, starts with a disclaimer stating that the motive of this video is not to hurt any woman's feelings. Then, taking the name of various Gods and Goddesses, they say that these things were said in ancient times, and that the video is just stating what has already been written and said historically.

Now, the very use of the word "characterless" is wrong in many ways. From a woman who speaks her mind fearlessly, to the woman who smokes and drinks; from a woman who've had premarital sex, to the woman who have sex outside of her marriage; each one of them are considered to be characterless. In fact, women who wear tight clothes, or put lipstick are characterless according to some, while women who party late at night are looked upon as 'whores'. If this is how our 'dictionary of ethics' work, then all women except for the women of one's own family will be considered characterless.

Yes, men won't be characterless if they do the same things. They might be bad, spoilt, or misbehaved, but never characterless. After all, a family's respect doesn't lie in their hands or their actions. It exists in a woman's vagina and her breasts.
