Here is a scholarship programme for your girl child by the government, know how to apply

Girls in our country often have to undergo a lot of hardships to ensure higher education for themselves. In fact, in our country marriage becomes the other option, or often the only option for girls when they finish their graduation. Parents are either unwilling to, or feel it's a waste of money to let their girls study.But there is good news, atleast for a single girl child. There is a scholarship titled , "PG Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child".

Every year, around 3000 single girl children avail a scholarship of Rs. 36,200 per year.The scholarship is given for two years of post-graduation.

What are the requirements?

1. Girl students without having any brother or the girl student who are twin daughters/ fraternal daughter may also apply for scholarship under the aforesaid scheme

2. Her age has to be 30 years or less.

3 She has been enrolled in a recognized university's first year regular batch.What are recognized universities?

a. Universities/Institutions/Colleges included under section 2(f) & and 12(B) of UGC Act.

b. Deemed to be Universities included under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 and eligible to receive grants-in-aid from UGC. Those Deemed Universities which do not receive funds from the Central/ State Government are not eligible institutions under the scheme.

c. Universities/Institutions/College funded by Central/State Government.

d. Institutes of National Importance

Who cannot apply?

1. In a family if one son and one daughter is available then girl child will not be considered for scholarship under the scheme.

2. Admission to PG Course in Distance education mode is not covered under the scheme.

In order to apply, one needs to go the website https://scholarships.gov.in/ and click on the tab of 'UGC Schemes'. One can then click on the 'apply' button of the scholarship. If more information is desired, the 'guidelines' tab outlines the same. Once there, a new window will open where a new candidate has to fill in her details and register. After that, one can apply, if eligible, for the scholarship.

Payments and duration of scholarship :

1. Payments will be generated on annual basis.

2. Scholarship granted under the scheme will be kept renewed during the period of postgraduate course. But it will be subject to good conduct and maintenance of prescribed attendance.

3. The scholarship will be renewed for the next year of study on receipt of an annual progress report to be granted by the administrative head of the University/ Institution/ College.(E.g.Registrar of a University/ Director of the Institution/ Principal of the College or any other officer designated by them).

4. Students who fail to get promoted to the next class/ level would lose out on the scholarship.

5. Change in course of study will not be permitted.

This is a wonderful opportunity, especially for economically backward families with single daughters, to study more.
