These women weren't afraid to scale the highest peak--Mount Everest.

  • For years, Mount Everest has beckoned to people--men and women alike. However, when we think of adventurers or explorers, we almost always think of men.

    But conquering peaks has never been a man's prerogative. In fact, history is full of women mountaineers who have scaled highest of the mountains, making everyone proud!

    Here are seven women who have conquered the ever so majestic Mount Everest and set many records!

  • Lhakpa Sherpa

    The 44-year-old mountaineer of Nepalese origin recently broke her own world record for the most Everest summits by a woman! Lhakpa Sherpa is the only woman who has climbed world's highest peak eight times. That's right, not once, not twice, but eight times!

  • Junko Tabei

    We can't talk of women mountaineers and forget Junko Tabei. This Japanese mountain climber was the first woman to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 16, 1975.

  • Bachendri Pal

    Winner of Padma Shri and Arjuna Award, Bachendri Pal is a force to be reckoned with. This mountaineer made history in 1984 by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

  • Arunima Sinha
    She is a woman of substance who deserves all the praise and recognition we can give her. Arunima Sinha is the first female amputee to climb Mount Everest.

    The former national volleyball player, who lost her leg after she was pushed out of a train by thieves, refused to succumb to her disability. Determined to keep living for herself, she excelled in a basic mountaineering course and climbed Everest with the help of her prosthetic leg.

  • Santosh Yadav

    In early 90's this Indian mountaineer became the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest twice and the first woman to climb the Everest from Kangshung face.

    She first climbed the peak in May 1992 and then repeated her feat in May 1993. Yadav was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000.

  • Poorna Malavath

    This young mountaineer has a record of her own--she is the youngest woman to climb Mount Everest. On May 25, 2014, aged 13 years and 11 months, Poorna Malavath scaled the peak.

    In fact, Rahul Bose made on film her life and achievements titled Poorna and even starred in it.

  • Lydia Bradey

    This mountaineer from New Zealand is best known for becoming the first woman to summit Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen in 1988. And you thought you needed proper oxygen supply to scale mountains?

    Her amazing feat also made her the first New Zealand female and the youngest New Zealander at the time.
