    In a society that is mostly dominated by the patriarchal way, it is no surprise that movies before the 90's were being made to portray widows as meek and pitiful, barring a few like Nargis Dutt in Mother India. To most people's relief, things have changed over the years. There is a trail of woman-oriented films now and widows in Bollywood films are no longer treated as scum. Let's take a look at the new-age widows of Hindi cinema.

    Deepa Mehta's film Water examines the dilemma of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in Varanasi. The film mainly focuses on a relationship between one of the widows (Lisa Ray), who wants to escape the social restrictions.
