Black to Barfi: Recent Bollywood films that have dealt with mental illnesses

With the spotlight back on mental illness-related films, thanks to Kareena Kapoor Khan's next project, we take a look at some of the most well-known Bollywood films that have dealt with mental illnesses in the past.

  • Koi Mil Gaya
    Hrithik Roshan's 2003 blockbuster had the actor playing the role of the mentally challenged Rohit. The film, apart from winning all big awards that year and making millions at the Box Office, paved the way for two sequels - Krrish and Krrish 3.

  • Taare Zameen Par
    The film that catapulted child actor Darsheel Safary to an enviable league was the film Taare Zameen Par. In the 2007 Aamir Khan film, Darsheel plays a child whose dyslexia affects his normal day-to-day life.

  • U Me aur Hum
    Kajol plays a woman, who is diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, in this 2008 film. Her performance apart, the film did not manage to make much of an impact in the minds of the audience.

  • Barfi
    In this 2012 romantic comedy, Priyanka Chopra plays the role of Jhilmil, an autistic woman. The actress' performance in the film helped her clinch several awards that year. The film was also sent to the Oscars as India's entry to the Best Foreign Film category the same year.

  • My Name Is Khan
    The 2010 Karan Johar film saw Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role as Rizwan Khan, who suffers from Asperger Syndrome. My Name Is Khan dealt with the way the life of a normal Muslim man in the US went through a severe transformation after the 9/11 attacks.

    This National Award-winning film by Aparna Sen had daughter Konkona Sen Sharma playing the role of Meethi, a schizophrenic woman in her 30s. The real-meets-surreal film was among the best of Konkona's performances.

    Black
    In Black, Amitabh Bachchan plays a character affected by Alzheimer's Disease, and gradually inches towards dementia. The film by Sanjay Leela Bhansali won several accolades and much acclaim, and Amitabh received much applause for his performance. Rani Mukerji, Bachchan's co-star in the film, too, was lauded to the heavens for her acting in the film.
