India set to get its first lingerie vending machine. But, what's the point when our society has a problem with breasts?

We can't truly progress till the time Indian society continues to create furore over female bodies.

You must have heard of coke vending machines, condom vending machines, and even those rare sanitary napkin machines. But, India is set to get a unique vending machine--for lingerie. That's it right, a machine that will dispense bras and panties!

This first of its kind machine will be installed at a mall in Mumbai and will be gradually available in other parts of the country as well.

Such a vending machine will not only save a lot of time, but will also make it easier for women to shop. Because let's be honest, no one wants to haggle with those creepy men in roadside shops, who with just one look can tell you which bra would fit you.

While we laud the idea of this unique vending machine, we can't help but speculate if it would actually change the way the Indian society looks at female bodies. Not to mention the problem it has with women breasts.

Women are repeatedly shamed for having breasts--not by just men, but women too. Take bra straps for instance. Although bras are easily available in local shops, hung in full public view, a visible strap on a woman's body scandalizes everyone.

It's surprising why people have a problem with this harmless piece of garment. Maybe because bras cover breasts, and we as a society can't help but sexualize it. After all, it's never about the bra, it's about the women's bodies.

Since childhood a woman is asked to cover her chest, because her breasts will be stared at by men and it's her duty to protect her modesty. The same society never raises a finger at men, who ogle at breasts and make women feel uncomfortable.

Remember the time when a popular English daily published an article on Deepika Padukone's cleavage and called it news? As if cleavage is something that no one is aware of and a woman having one is an alien concept!

And it is not just breasts that the society has a problem with, it's breastfeeding as well. Don't believe us? Let us cite an example of a case that happened recently.

A woman in Pune was asked to de-board a train because the sight of her breastfeeding her baby made people uncomfortable. Seems outrageous, right? Especially when breastfeeding is a natural process and is a source of food and nutrition for a baby.

Every woman in the world has breasts and it's no big deal. Not to mention, it's just another body part, and yet, the society can't stop stigmatizing it.

And it's not the society that has a problem with breasts, it's our Internet too. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and others have often shown double standards when it comes to nipples. Did you know that there is a complete ban on the pictures of women's breasts with nipples. While when it comes to men and their nipples, they are just harmless.

The society has sexualized a woman's body to such an extent that even the mere mention of the word breast is equated with sex. And this taboo is the reason why women still choose to not go to a doctor to get checked for breast cancer.

The thing is, no matter how many lingerie vending machines are set up in the country, unless the society rethinks its stance on female body this progress is actually futile. So, the next time you point out to your friend to cover up because her cleavage or strap is visible, think how you're perpetuating the stigma too.
