Roopa Ganguly dares Mamata Banerjee's supporters to send their women to West Bengal and see if they can "survive without getting raped"
Why are politicians dragging the sensitive issue of rape into their dirty politics?
As West Bengal still struggles to come out of the current unrest going on there, yet another controversy involving the state has sparked off. Only, this time around the deal is dirtier as it unnecessarily drags the very sensitive issue of rape into it all.
On Friday, Roopa Ganguly, the Bharatiya Janata Party MP from West Bengal passed on a rather derogatory statement while speaking to the media at an event that kick started the whole controversy.
"I dare all the parties, the ones who keep flattering the West Bengal Government and the Congress, to send their daughters, sisters-in-law, wives to Bengal, without taking any hospitality from Mamata Banerjee. If they are able to survive there for 15 days without getting raped, then tell me," she said almost unapologetically, without even realizing that rape isn't something that you can just casually use for political purposes.
It is in fact, a goddamn serious crime and that you can't just conveniently associate it with women, for the sake of garnering political support. Coming from an educated female's mouth, these words seem ten times more disgusting, but that's not it.

Ganguly's follow-up on her bizarre statement saying--a fortnight was longer than women could survive in the state without protection--is even worse.
Clearly, she still hasn't understood the sensitivity of this issue and definitely hasn't realized how hurtful her remarks could sound. We hope that better sense prevails and that politicians just stop crossing the line for their personal gains.
