In 2017, the then Home Affairs minister Haribhai Chaudhary had said that marital rape can't be made a criminal offence in India because of high illiteracy rate, poverty, extreme religious beliefs and the very 'sanctity' of marriage. Marital rape does not exist within the Indian legal system, but it does exist within our social system. A woman in Delhi tried to kill herself by consuming nail paint remover after a long duration of rape, torture and unnatural sex at the hands of her husband, all for dowry.

Not just that, she has also alleged that her father-in-law touched her inappropriately. But she was forced to keep quiet about the matter. But she was forced to keep quiet. The incident took place of February 25, when she was rushed to the hospital, after Riya she drank nail paint remover.

She was in hospital for two days. On March 1, she filed a police complaint in Paschim Vihar police station, where she alleged that her husband Harsh allegedly tortured, raped and harassed her for dowry.

After a warning, apologies and a lot of counselling, Riya decided Harsh was ready to repent and withdrew her complaint. But that didn't happen. On a trip to Jim Corbett, he forced unnatural sex on her and when she resisted, he blackmailed his own wife with her nude pictures and certain videos.

But as usual, when a reporter tried to contact Riya, her husband spoke on her behalf and said it the complaint was the result of other [people influencing his wife. He sid that he had contacted the cyber cell of Delhi Police which has had the comments made social media removed.

Riya has not responded to queries and police are still investigating the matter. Probably, this go nowhere and maybe, it's all a lie. But since we don't have a marital rape la in place, what else can be expected of it?
