According to a study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness, high intensity interval training, also commonly referred to as the HIIT workout, is your best bet at burning stubborn visceral fat.

Before you get lost in the jargon, let me explain: visceral fat is body fat stored inside the abdominal cavity. Also known as abdominal fat, not only does it look unattractive but it also puts a lot of pressure on organs around your stomach, like your liver, pancreas, and intestines.

Coming back to the study, researchers divided participants in two groups that did four workouts each week, comprising different exercises. The first group did four steady-state cardio and strength workouts; while the other mixed two sessions of HIIT with two steady-state workouts through the week.

The groups continued on with their respective exercise regimes for 8 weeks. The results?

Researchers noted that participants in both groups showed significant weight loss; however, the HIIT recorded more inch loss from the waistline. Wait, there's more: HIIT also boosted the participants cardio-respiratory fitness levels.

HIIT workouts include intense, non-stop training for a short bursts of time followed by recovery periods where you rest or do low to moderate intensity exercises.

HIIT workouts have also been to boost metabolism.
