Menstruation is an uncomfortable process. Not just for women because of the bloody pain, but also for the society, as no one wants to talk about it. However, to start a healthy discourse on periods, a 20-year-old college student from Ludhiana has started a mission.

Karan Luthra, who's a graduation student from SCD Government College Ludhiana, shared a video on his Facebook account to talk about issues related to menstruation. In the video, he talks about how the society considers it a taboo topic and urged girls not to keep quiet about periods. Yes, a guy is talking about periods!

"I know half of the audience will switch off this video hearing the word periods. But girls, please chill. We know there is something called periods and it is absolutely normal. Stop being embarrassed about it," Luthra says in the beginning of his video.

He also advises parents to educate their sons about this natural process instead of asking their girls to keep quiet, even if in pain, and not to discuss about periods with anyone.

"Girls, it is only you who can bear this every month. You all are special and so are your bodies. So don't keep quiet instead discuss about how periods can be managed efficiently. Parents, please educate your boys instead of snubbing your girls on this topic. And boys, think twice before making fun of any girl. Think that you too have sisters and mothers. Boys should in fact be taught to be more affectionate towards women in their life during periods," adds Luthra.

In an interview to The Indian Express he said, "There is a wall of awkward silence when it comes to topics like periods and sex between parents and children is what I observed. So I started making videos on those awkward topics like periods, sex, sexual abuse, mental illness among others. The more we will talk about it, the easier it will become to discuss them commonly."

Although we are living in the 21st century, we still haven't been able to do away with the stigmas attached to menstruation and menstrual health. While activists have been trying to educate the masses about menstruation, the society still refuses to talk about it and normalize it.

We still live in a time when Instagram feels entitled enough to take down the photo of a woman because her period stain is visible. This is why it's important that the youth of this country take the responsibility on their shoulders, just like this guy has. We hope that someday period will no longer be a hushed up topic and girls won't have to hide.
