You must have already heard of Akshay Kumar's upcoming project Padman that deals with the subject of menstrual hygiene. After all, it's a true story based on the life of Tamil Nadu-based social activist Arunachalam Muruganantham, who revolutionised the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkin machine.

However, did you know that there is another upcoming movie that aims to break the stereotypes attached to menstruation as well? The film, Phullu, tells the story of a man who sets out to make affordable pads for the women in his village.

The film, which is set in rural India, is about Phullu (played by Sharib Ali Hashmi) who wants to help women of his village get access to sanitary napkins. The trailer shows how he learns about sanitary napkins on one of his visits to the nearby city. He soon realizes that the women in his village are oblivious to the sanitary product and makes it his mission to provide sanitary pads to them.

Thus, begins his journey from the village idiot to the renaissance man. The film also has an interesting tagline which says "Jo aurat ka dard nahi samajhta, bhagwan usse mard nahi samajhta."

The film, which is set to release on June 16, is directed by Abhishek Saxena, starring Sharib Ali Hashmi, Jyotii Sethi, and Nutan Surya.

Talking about menstruation has always been a taboo in the Indian society. While all women experience this natural phenomenon, it is quietly brushed under the rug. Even our local chemist shop makes sure that a harmless packet of Whisper is bound in black plastic as if it's a dirty little secret.

But, it's the women in the rural India who have to experience the worst, as most of them are unaware of menstrual health and hygiene, let alone the products. But, there's still some hope as films like Padman and Phullu are trying to start a discourse on menstruation that also includes men.
