Meet the two women bikers riding from Kanyakumari to Kashmir are on their way to break a Limca record
Shubra Acharya and Amrutha Kashinath, who will be travelling from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, will cover over 4,000 kms to break the Limca record.
Gone are the days when bikes were synonymous to men. It's the age of women bikers, who are not only badass, but are also setting out to achieve record breaking feats. And bikers Shubra Acharya and Amrutha Kashinath are no less. They are on their way to break the Limca record for longest North-South (Kanyakumari to Kashmir) expedition.
According to The New Indian Express, the two women plan to cover over 4,000 kms on their bikes in five-and-a-half days, in an attempt to break the current Limca Book of Records of 156 hours. Their expedition, The Long Highway, will begin from Kanyakumari on September 4 and on an average they will be covering 800 kilometres per day.
In an interview to City Express, Shubra said "We will be starting our ride from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, and taking the Central India Route via Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Jhansi, Agra, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Manali and reach Leh." Their adventure will take them through 12 Indian States and two Union Territories in 4,051 kms. They are riding KTM Duke 390 Motorbikes without a service team or a backup. Pretty gutsy, right? We think so too.
While talking about the aim of this grand expedition, Amrutha said "The aim of this expedition is to challenge the notion that India is unsafe for women travellers. We hope to drive home the point that India is a safe place to travel, for men and women, by taking some basic precautions. We want to see more people, particularly women conquer their fears and go explore more."
And this isn't even the first travel expedition for this amazing duo. They have taken many such adventures together, over the last few years. "We are riding the bikes in almost stock condition; there are a few modifications we have made to improve efficiency and to increase our comfort while riding," Shubra said.
And it's not like that the duo isn't prepared to face possible roadblocks they may encounter during this journey. In fact, they have already started gearing up for it. " We are prepared with rain gear, rain proof luggage and brilliant tyres on our bikes that can handle such situations. If we are to get bad weather in terms of landslides or earthquakes, we must only surrender to Mother Nature," Amrutha added.
So how did this expedition come to be? Well, the concept was conceived in August 2016, but it took them a year to make it happen. The women believe that when other women see and hear about their expedition without backup or support, they will realize that they can do it too. And they are right because we are already psyched about their adventure and are hoping that many other women bikers take on the roads.
And you know what? This has got us interested in taking an adventure of our own! Anyone for Nagaland to Nagpur?
