The main job of Censor Board of Film Federation (CBFC)  in India is to give certification to every film that's screened in the country. However, there have been instances when the board has taken its job way too seriously--sometimes more than it's required.

You see, apart from giving certification to the films, there's another thing the CBFC loves to do--impose sanskars. And why wouldn't it? After all, it is the custodians of the Indian society's moral fibre.

And you can't even blame them. Some things are indeed too unsanskari for them to handle. And it's only justified when the board makes cuts or in some extreme unsanskari cases--bans the entire movie from releasing.

Wondering what these unsanskari things are that the CBFC wants to protect us from? Well, here they are:

Censor Board Cannot Handle The Word 'Intercourse'
The CBFC recently revealed that it didn't quite like the use of the word 'intercourse' in the trailer of Imtiaz Ali's Jab Harry Met Sejal. After all, the word is completely NSFW, right?

The Pahlaj Nihalani-led board has decided to chop a dialogue from the trailer. In an interview to ANI, the CBFC chief said, "For the digital medium there is no need for certificate but what's aired on television needs to certified by CBFC. We (CBFC) cannot stop content on the internet. But we can and will stop the broadcast of the uncensored footage on television.

He went on to say that the board has granted a 'UA' to the trailer of Jab Harry Met Sejal on condition that the dialogue with the word 'intercourse' would get chopped out eventually. "They (the filmmakers) have not come back to us with the deletion. So in principle, the trailer has not been passed yet," he added.

Words Like Orgasm, Dildo, and Sexy Are Too Unsanskari
The Censor Board wasn't happy with the film Angry Indian Goddesses at all. After all, it not only had female protagonists, but also had words like orgasm, dildo, and sexy. Needless to say the board had to use its beep machine to the fullest and remove all of them.

Although the movie went on to receive standing ovation at many international film festivals, it was still too unsanskari for the CBFC.

If Films Are Too Lady-oriented, They Become Unsanskari For the CBFC
The soon-to-be released film Lipstick Under My Burkha was refused certification by the board. For the uninitiated, the reason was pretty simple--it was too lady oriented. Yes, we are not making this up.

If you think CBFC didn't give a valid reason justifying their logic, you are wrong. In fact, the board wrote a full-fledged letter citing why it was refusing certification to the film.

In a letter sent to the filmmakers, the CBFC says: "The story is lady oriented, their fantasy above life. There are continious (sic) sexual abusive words, audio pornography and a bit sensitive touch about one particular section of society hence film refused under guidelines 1(a), 2(vii), 2(ix), 2(x), 2(xi), 2(xii) and 3(i)."

However, The Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) recommended an adult certification for the film and ordered the CBFC to pass it. Thankfully, the film will be released in July.

Anything Related To Sex Is A Strict No-No For The Censor Board
If non-threatening words like 'intercourse' fail to pass the test, it shouldn't come as a surprise that that the Hindi version of it is a strict no-no. The word 'sambhog' in the film Hate Story 3 (the movie sucked, we agree) was replaced by the word 'milan'.

If you are aware of the meaning of the word 'milan', you would probably know that it means meeting. We still don't understand how it can be used in place of sex. We mean even using it in a sentence makes absolutely no sense at all. However, it obviously did to the Censor Board because why have sex, when you can just meet people, right?
