3 deadly sins you commit each time you say "I'm not like other girls"

It denies worth to what a 'typical' woman is.

It denies worth to what a 'typical' woman is.

"You're not like other boys" seems like a compliment, doesn't it? After all, whenever any girl anywhere uses this phrase she refers to the boy in question as a being of integrity who can be trusted. However, it's not to say that the 'others' are unworthy, inferior, typical beings. The 'others', as a matter of fact, are the celebrated ones. The "bad" boys, the ones with all the charisma, the people who pull the ground from beneath any woman they choose to prey (yep!) on. Hell, they're what teen aspirations are made of and what manhood at its best looks like.

That said, when the genders are reversed this phrase of praise takes a drastic U-turn. Because the moment you say, "I'm not like other girls", the conversation becomes about how you are special--an ethereal being; a thing beyond the ordinary; a rarely-found gem and many other epithets that I really don't want to waste time on, yours or mine. It denies worth to what a 'typical' woman is and if that's not shaming then we wonder what is.

The Moment You Utter Those Unforgivable Words, You Create an Ideal to be Followed

When you say this innocuous sentence you do two things quite successfully, albeit unknowingly: a) you're making being unique the only acceptable standard for a girl; and b) you're shaming women. The second these words make it out of your mouth, you verbally sign an agreement, which says: "Yes, women deserve the stigma they are subjected to." You're promoting everything that snatches a woman's right to live the way she wants.  You are making your fellow women an inferior breed, telling an already bleak world that being like 'every other woman' is not good enough.

You're Making Women Everywhere Look Bad To Make Yourself Look Good

Let's be honest: You wouldn't like it if somebody else makes you seem like plain Jane, to make themselves seem like the belle of the ball now would you? So when you deem yourself so high and mighty, you're saying that there's nobody else who can compete with you. You're dividing womenfolk into tomboys and princesses, ambitious and homely, unique and plain-all so that you can rule over a man's heart. Since you're trampling over your own kind, here's hoping he's at least worth it.

One Day, You're Going to Suffocate Under The Burden of This Phrase You Use to Compliment Yourself

Sounds grave, right? Well, it actually is. Imagine this: You're with this guy now. The one who likes that you're not like other girls. The one who is attracted by your uniqueness. Some time has passed, and your etherealness has become his new normal.  So when he meets someone who is not like you, it's her uniqueness that will now attract him. It's not his character flaw; neither are we saying that this one phrase can lead to your partner cheating on you. Oh, no no. But the simple truth is: just like beauty, uniqueness is in the eye of the beholder. It's all relative, guys.  So the next you start getting flirty with that guy you like, please don't do this disservice to your fellow women.  After all, you've gotta keep sisters before misters-right?
