Can someone please tell me what does having sex have to do with adulting?

If only sex could prepare you for adulthood.

I remember watching the film Ishaqzaade a few days ago and wincing at the lyrics of the song Hua Chokra Jawan Re!  If you are one of the lucky few who hasn't seen the movie, allow me to explain the context of this particular item number to you.

It takes place when the lead actor in the film--Arjun Kapoor has sex for the first time with the leading lady, played by Parineeti Chopra. What's even more bizarre is the actor's entire on-screen family breaks into an impromptu jig after he shares the news with them. Though, I doubt the girl's family reacted in a similar manner, but that is beside the point.

After sitting through the entire song, I came to the conclusion that somehow sex is equal to adulting in India. And out of all the confounding equations I have come across in my life, this one is the most perplexing of them all.

Really, what does sexual intercourse have to do with becoming a MAN, or a WOMAN, for that matter? As far as science has been able to prove, love-making--no matter how passionate or wild--does not do any favours to your brain or intellect. You become an adult, at least in the eyes of law, when you turn 18 and not when you f**k.

And if that was the case then most of my friends, who copulate like monkeys, should have stopped behaving like kindergartners by now. On the contrary, they are nowhere close to behaving like adults anytime soon.

The fact of the matter is: we place too much undue importance of this very normal biological activity called sex. In fact, almost everything moral is related to when and who you have sex with. It is this colossal milestone that is deemed to change you magically, make you wiser, and turn you into an enigma in the eyes of your virgin friends.

Ask any of your sexually active friends how sex has made them more mature and you will have to wait for an eternity for an answer. Because there is none. And what about those 30-year-old virgins, who are still waiting to pop their cherry? Can they be called any less adult because they've not had sex? Yea, me don't think so.

So, let's just stop idolizing sex and treat it for what it is. It's definitely not a magical potion that can turn you into mature adults.
