Sex. One word that keeps the ball rolling in every relationship. Let's face it, apart from making babies, it is not only fun, but also pleasurable AF! But did you know it can actually make a relationship last longer? Yes! A new study has found that the afterglow after a romp session can actually make your relationship last longer. As if we needed more reasons to jump our partner's bones!

According to a study by researchers at Florida State University, sex triggers a 48-hour 'afterglow' that helps couples to bond. It was found that that the lovey-dovey feeling that you get after having sex with your partner lingers for two whole days and is the key to long-term relationship.

The study, which was published in the journal Psychological Science, involved 214 newlywed couples. For the study, each person was asked to fill out a diary for two weeks. They were separately instructed to rate how satisfied they felt with their sex life, their partner, their relationship, and their marriage in that moment.

The couples also had to rate the quality of their marriage overall at the beginning of the study, then again six months later. Most participants reported having sex four times during the 14 days of the study, averaging about once every three or four days.  But, it was found that their satisfaction levels spanned much longer.

The researchers found that those who had sex on a given day, tended to feel equally satisfied up to two days later. From the findings, scientists were able to conclude that the secret to maintaining quality in a relationship over time is to have regular sex.

The lead author of the study, Andrea Meltzer said, "This research is important because it joins other research suggesting that sex functions to keep couples pair bonded."

"People with a stronger sexual afterglow--that is, people who report a higher level of sexual satisfaction 48 hours after sex--report higher levels of relationship satisfaction several months later."
