Let's just admit it: the saas-bahu soaps we all are so hooked to are really notscience fiction. What we mean to say is that though in the most exaggerated form possible--they do reflect the drama that goes on in most Indian households. And ladies, if your in-laws are not the most wonderful set of in-laws, you probably end up identifying with the damsels in distress these serials love to base their plots on.

But, on a more serious note--it can get pretty stressful if you have a hard time getting along with your in-laws. And if you are the sensitive kind--it gets all the more difficult trying to cope with the situation. Now, you may have been told to soldier up and not take things to the heart, but in all honesty it's really not that simple. But, don't worry ladies--we've got your back. All you need to do is develop a thick skin to endure what comes your way without it affecting your mental health. And here's how you can do it:

Practice Selective Listening When In An Argument
When tempers fly high, words tend to turn into two-edged swords. Yes, they can sting and hurt but it's really in your hands to what extent you let them affect you. Imagine this: you are in middle of an argument and someone is saying something to you, which you don't agree with. But, instead of breaking down, try tuning your thoughts out. Pick one sentence in your head and keep repeating it mentally. This will help in blocking out what is being said to you. Basically, you only focus on part that is really important and shut out the rest.

Exit The Place Of Alteration Quickly
Sometimes it's best to seek a change in scenery to let your nerves cool down. It's really not easy to think straight when you are angry at someone or the situation is not too pleasant around you. So, what you do is excuse yourself and go out for a walk. This will help a great deal in composing yourself. Preferably, pick a place which has a lot of greenery around it like trees, flowers, and lush grass. Believe it or not, it will make you feel stronger.

Just Remember Kuch Toh Log Kahenge
Ever heard the song "Kuch toh log kahenge, logo ka toh kaam hai kehna…" If yes, then you would probably remember the lyrics "Kyu beekar ki baato mein bheeg jaye naina."

Just remember, no two people think alike. Every individual is different and so are their opinions. There will be times when you would have to face opposing views and that too not in the most polite way. Yet, you must know that you are not the only person who is going through this. So, what if someone doesn't agree with you. This doesn't mean that you have to alter your personality to please others. If you feel you are in the right, then just let people talk. No one, remember, no none has the power to hurt you.

Get Angry, Not Sad

Anger and sadness are two very strong, and slightly similar, emotions. However, there's one tiny difference. Anger evaporates after some time, but sadness lingers. In fact, it's much difficult to cope with sadness than anger because melancholy triggers others unpleasant memories too. So, the next time you are in a situation like this, allow yourself to feel angry. Also, think of a creative way to vent out your anger. But, no self harm please.

Don't Suppress Your Emotions, Speak Up
Keeping your emotions bottled up will do you no good. Furthermore, it will make you prone to emotional outburst. So, in order to keep your feelings stable and your mind sane, it's best if you put forth your opinion. Of course, don't turn it into a fight, but be eloquent while expressing your concerns. Also, it's imperative that you let your partner know what you are going through. Some emotional support really never hurt anyone.
