Ditch the bad vibes and start afresh this New Year with these rules that will help you maintain ties that are not only satisfying but also long term in nature.

  • The key to good relationships lies in spending quality time, ensuring that you have time for your family and friends once in a while.
  • Learn to respect and listen to those around you, even if you don't necessarily agree with their opinions. It does not mean you cannot listen.
  • Be patient in your dealings with people. There is no point in losing your temper on trivial issues. It will only reflect badly on you.
  • Do not backstab. There is nothing worse than being talked about by your friends and family behind your back. It is simply humiliating.
  • It is hardly ever the grand gestures that make a difference. Pay attention to details. They can make someone feel really special.
  • Be secure and comfortable in your own skin and about your personal equations with people.
  • Do not take your loved ones for granted. Take time out to express your feelings to them.
  • Learn to see the lighter side of life. Inculcate a sense of humour that allows you to move your focus away from the negative aspects of a situation.
  • Try and forgive, especially when a person is not aware of consciously hurting you. There is no point in holding on to grudges forever.
  • Learn how to argue well and get your point across without screaming or being rude. The best way to go is to open the room up for negotiation.
