Why Taylor Swift's ongoing sexual harassment lawsuit is the one thing every girl needs to know about
Taylor Swift is charging just $1 in the lawsuit because it's all about making a point.
Remember Taylor Swift? Yes, the same country singer who have had us grooving to her songs ever since she came out with Love Story. The same pop culture sensation who has 10 Grammy Awards to her name. Well, she is currently fighting a sexual harassment lawsuit against a local radio host, who lifted up her skirt to grab her butt while posing for a picture.
It may seem a usual thing to you, after all such incidents of groping isn't something new. But, this lawsuit is probably one of the most important sexual harassment cases the world has seen lately.
For those who are unaware of the incident, here's what actually happened.
Swift Accused Radio DJ David Mueller For Sexually Harassing Her
The incident happened way back in June 2013, when the Bad Blood singer was at a concert in Denver, US, when she met DJ David Mueller. While posing for a picture with the radio DJ, Swift experienced something that is horrifying for any woman in the world. Mueller, who was an employee of local radio station 98.5 KYGO at that time, lifted her skirt from behind and groped her.
In her deposition for the ongoing trial, Swift says "Right as the moment came for us to pose for the photo, he took his hand and put it up my dress and grabbed onto my ass cheek, and no matter how much I scooted over, it was still there. It was completely intentional. I've never been so sure of anything in my life."
An alleged photo of the incident, later obtained by TMZ, also showed Mueller's hand in that area of her body.
After receiving flak and being shamed by public, the DJ was fired from his job with the radio station. He claimed that the incident never even happened and sued Swift for damages in September 2015. The basis for his lawsuit stemmed from the money he was making prior to being fired and his belief that he had not touched the singer inappropriately at any time. He is demanding $3 million from Swift in damages and has dismissed all her allegations.
So why are we talking about it? Well, because of what happened next.
Swift, After Being Sued By The Radio Host, Counter Sued Him For Just $1
Yes, you heard it right. She is actually suing him for just a dollar. Why such a small amount you ask? Well, because her lawsuit, as she says in her statements, isn't about the money.
According to The Telegraph, she wants to hold Mueller responsible for what he did. In her lawsuit, she says "I want this case to be an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts."
Her Mother Andrea Didn't Want Her To Go Forward With The Lawsuit
You know, it's not unusual for relatives and even parents to discourage a girl from filing a complaint or lawsuit against a molester. Well, because log kya kahenge. Swift's mother Andrea didn't want this one case to define her daughter's life and it was only after Mueller lawsuit that she agreed to go forward with the trial.
In her testimony, Andrea said "I went into the dressing room and I saw her face. I could see that there was something horribly wrong. She said, 'Mom, a guy just grabbed my ass.' I wanted to vomit and cry at the same time."
"I went into the dressing room and I saw her face. I could see that there was something horribly wrong. It was just destroying her that she said that. As a parent it made me question why I taught her to be so polite. I did not want this event to define her life," she went to say in her testimony.
"I did not want her to have to life through the endless memes and gifs that tabloid media and internet trolls decided to come up with--doctored pictures and making her relive this awful moment over and over again," the BBC quoted her saying.
Hollywood Has Been Extremely Silent About Swift's Trial
When it comes to Hollywood, people--be it actors or singers--are pretty much united about a pertinent issue. Remember when Meryl Streep spoke out against US President Donald Trump during her Oscar speech? The entire film industry supported her. Even during singer Ke$ha's sexual assault case. However, there has been absolute pin-drop silence in Swift's case.
The thing is no one really likes Swift for the kind of opinion she has regarding certain things. In fact, a lot of feminist have shamed her for not standing up for right things. However, it's ironical how no one is actually supporting her or standing up with as she goes through this trial.
But, Swift Isn't The One To Cower Down--She's Still The Bada*s Woman She Was Before
Although it has been a taxing trial, the singer hasn't let go off her confident self. DJ Mueller's lawyer attorney, Gabe McFarland, has cross-examined Swift, but she has stood firmly with her initial statements.
According to Glamour, McFarland suggested Swift could've taken a break from her concert meet-and-greet if she was so shaken up by Mueller's alleged assault. And guess what she said? "Your client could have taken a normal photo with me." The lawyer even asked her if she was critical of her bodyguard Greg Dent To which she curtly replied "I'm critical of your client sticking his hand under my skirt and grabbing my ass."
The best thing was when she took down victim blaming by its horns. When McFarland asked the singer is she felt anything about the DJ losing his job because of her accusations, she said "I'm not going to let you or your client make me feel in any way that this is my fault. Here we are years later, and I'm being blamed for the unfortunate events of his life that are the product of his decisions-not mine."
You see, you may not like Swift's opinion about feminism or even her songs, but you can't deny the fact the current case indeed makes her the hero for all sexual harassment survivors. Not only did she filed a case against her accuser, but she also didn't let the cross-examination bring her down. We don't know about you, but Swift has definitely given us major hope for the future.
