Why is there a fuss over allowing nuns to hear confessions? Hello! Women are better listeners anyway

Before you accuse us of partiality, there's a full-fledged study backing our claim.

While we were all chilling at home this Sunday, some members of the Kerala Catholic Reform Movement (KCRM) were carrying out a peaceful demonstration outside the bishop's house in Kochi, demanding that the church allow nuns to hear confessions of women and minor girls. Their reasons were pretty understandable. They did it all in the wake of the recent cases of sexual crimes involving priests in the Kerala.

Since nothing worth having comes easy in life, the Kerala Catholic Bishop Council (KCBC) dismissed this demand as a mere publicity stunt. In fact, Fr Paul Thelakkat, former spokesperson of the Syro-Malabar church rubbished the demand tagging it as being against the sacrament rules of the holy Bible.

Did anyone remind him that a confession (one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic church) is made to seek absolution for sins committed by the person? What kind of absolution will a woman get if she's not even comfortable opening up about her so-called sins in front of a man, who she doesn't exactly trust?

Don't you think that these trust issues are valid considering the fact that only recently, we heard about Father Robin Vaddakumchiryil's arrest for raping a minor girl in Kottiyoor, amongst many other such cases?

Peeps, it's not man versus women here. It's simply about one human being's comfort level with another.

On second thoughts, it is men versus women because women are definitely the better listeners. We are not claiming this, several studies have proven it. According to a research published in the journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, parts of the brain linked to emotions, calculating risks, and the ability to listen are more prominent in women as compared to men, who are more inclined towards motor skills and co-ordination.

So unless women want to confess about not getting their cars serviced on time or overspeeding, it goes without saying that most of them would want to talk about their innermost feelings to someone they feel is actually listening to them, someone they can connect with.

It's not that men don't listen, but when they do, they do it not half-heartedly, but half-brainedly. Again, not our claim. Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis found that men listen with one side of their brain, while women listen with both. What more can we say?

We guess, the authorities have enough reasons to let the 'sinner' choose who they want to share things with, even if that means choosing mothers over fathers at the church. After all, it is Lord Jesus Christ, who has equipped women with those stellar listening powers and much more, we say.
