While most women only toy with the idea of riding a bike, a woman has solo-travelled 2000 km in India on her Harley Davidson bike. We don't know what more should we be excited about--her trip or her bike!

Lieutenant Commander Pooja Rajput travelled along the coastal line of India and covered Goa, Mangalore, Coorg, Muzhappilangad, Ooty, Coonoor, Calicut, Moodabidri, and Karwar. The Indian navy officer (yep she's woman in uniform!) said that women should travel without any pre-conceived notions.

In an interview to IANS, she said that she undertook the solo journey to gauge the safety of travellers like her in India. "When you are a woman riding on a 1600 cc superbike, it attracts lots of attention and there are lots of curious people on the road who try to stop you, of whom you should be aware," she said.

And it wasn't all safe and hunky dory for her. In fact, Rajput also met with an accident during her trip. It happened when she overtook a bus and the driver started honking and recklessly overtook her. "I was right behind the bus, the bus could not pull up and started slipping backwards. With great difficulty I managed to manoeuvre my bike to the left," said Rajput.

The navy officer also advised women to be careful of rowdy people and also of those, who cannot grapple with the idea of a female rider. She said that a woman on a bike sometimes attracts a lot of unwanted attention. And in her case, she was noticed more, because she was on a superbike.

However, despite the attention this badass woman thinks that women shouldn't be scared of stepping out and should be prepared instead. She asserted that women should learn self-defence to make sure they can handle any untoward incident.

"You need to get out of the house, sitting in your home and thinking that something would go wrong should not be on your mind. Go out and assess yourself on the road. I have a knife with me all the time, I have an iron baton, and a pepper spray. All these things are in my jacket pocket, or my pants pocket. Women should also learn some self-defence techniques (sic)," she said.

The number of women bikers or solo-travellers have slowly started growing in India. Despite the fact that our country lacks strict measures to ensure women safety, women like Rajput surely keep the dream alive. If more women start to step out of their houses and travel, then maybe the situation would improve.

Keeping everything aside, her trip is surely making us want to leave everything and travel. Maybe we should buy a bike--how about a Royal Enfield Bullet?
