Most of us realize the evils of patriarchy, yet whether we admit it or not, we become a party to it.

For the uninitiated, patriarchy refers to a system where men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it. There's a reason why head of the family has always been a man and not a woman, right? Because patriarchy.

And have you ever wondered why patriarchy is so deep rooted and why it works so well? Simply because our society gives our male counterparts leeway because they have a p*nis.

Don't believe us? Just take the example of curfew timings. Men can roam around freely whenever they want, however when it comes to women, things change quite drastically.

In his poem titled The Privileges of a Penis, Sudeep Pagedar talks about how the inherent patriarchy and misogyny has always questioned women and their actions.

He questions why women get scrutinized for the same things men aren't even bothered about. He also talks about how a certain rapper's songs about women in "short dresses" is doing tremendous to perpetuate the male gaze. How rape jokes are so common and even our abuses reek of misogyny and oppression.

This thought-provoking poem focuses on how our society favours men and treats women as second class citizens. Pagedar concludes the poem by promising that it's time for attention and that he will no longer stand at ease.

Unless we change our mindsets, no matter how much we try to challenge notions that say that women are weak or inferior, it will all go in vain. And the change needs to start with us, at our homes.

It starts with not laughing at a rape joke; With not judging a woman by the length of her clothes; With checking our privilege. It starts with accepting the fact that men and women are equal.
