This year began with the news of the Bengaluru mass molestation making the headlines. Hundreds of women were groped, harassed, and pawed at by a mob which could not be contained by the police at MG Road and Brigade Road in the city.

But, this incident did not deter the spirit of women as they are back on the streets to reclaim public spaces, and how.

British band Wild Beasts' latest video of the song Alpha Female shows women of Bengaluru skateboarding through the streets.

The video begins with a woman dressed in a pink sari, gliding through an alley on a skateboard. Next, a woman in a denim jacket and a black cap is seen skating in another part of the city, while onlookers stare.

Sasha Rainbow, the video director of the song states that skating has become synonyms with women liberation. "In places like Afghanistan, Cambodia, and India, skating has not been solidified as a male sport and therefore has had a massive cultural impact, teaching values about self-empowerment through skateboarding," she said in an interview to Dazed magazine.

"Because of the current political climate in the west and attitudes of intolerance and sexism across the world, I wanted to create a video that celebrates everyone who takes the risk to be themselves," she added.

The idea behind the video is to slam patriarchy, which it successfully does with the lyrics "I would not hold you back. Simple as that, yeah. Alpha female, I'll be right behind you".
