A biography of Kalpana Chawla, the India-born American astronaut who died in the Columbia space shuttle disaster, was released by her husband at a function in Chandigarh.

'Edge of Time', authored by the late astronaut's husband Jean Pierre Harrison, was released at a function held at the Punjab Engineering College University of Technology here, from where Kalpana passed out as an aeronautical engineer in 1982.

Before the release of the book yesterday, Harrison and Kalpana's sister, Anjali, presented a memoir of the astronaut's pictures depicting her life, from her childhood to the time she was in the Columbia space shuttle on her last journey.

Harrison also donated Kalpana's favourite books to the PECUT hostel library named after her.

Going down the memory lane, Harrison also showed pictures of Kalpana's student days at the PECUT, where she was one of the first girls in the aeronautical engineering batch.

"This book will be different from those earlier published as I have presented a story of her life and the time we spent together," Harrison said on the occasion.

It took three years for him to complete the book, Harrison said, adding that the profit generated from the book would be spent on providing education to underprivileged children.

Born in 1961 in Karnal, Haryana, Kalpana was one among the seven crew members killed in the Columbia space shuttle disaster on February 1, 2003.
