Of late we have witnessed a plethora of wacky make-up hacks. Some of them have left us pleasantly surprised. From using soap to set your eyebrows to orange lipstick instead of under-eye--these trends are taking the Internet by storm. But the latest addition to the lot is rather unique. Apparently, you can use a sanitary napkin to get that perfect winged eyeliner. And you've got Instagram blogger Geetika Chakravarti to thank for it.

Geetika posted a video doing doing her eye make-up, using a sanitary pad to perfect the winged look. If case, you are wondering how did she manage to do it, she cut a small wedge from the pad and adhered it under her eye. Then she went on to apply eyeshadow and liquid liner, using the cut-off strip as a guide to outline. The patch also worked as a protection pad--helping the make-up stay in place, without smudging.

Wondering why Geetika chose a sanitary napkin, when many other tool could have served the purpose? Because she wanted break a few stereotypes.

"I don't ever do this but I thought it was necessary to bring light to this subject. This girl commented on my latest video justifying the fact that the use of "sanitary pads" is against this so called culture of ours. This is backward thinking. Women have periods. God or the universe GAVE IT TO US. Stop being so backward in your mindset and thinking. I can parade a sanitary pad anytime and anywhere I want. I sure as hell am not ashamed. I can eat on my period , go to the temple when I'm on period , or be a normal human being on my period for god's sake. It shouldn't be a taboo subject," Geetika said in response to criticism to her video.

Nonetheless the critics didn't stop, and many went on to diss her for being 'against the Indian culture'.

Now, we by no way support her critics; but, we do not agree with her line of thinking, also. Yes, the word 'period' is still uttered in hushed tones, but using a sanitary pad to convey the message seems more like a publicity stunt rather than a real effort to create waves of change. Think about it: many women across urban and rural India do not have access to sanitary pads. While, most make do with basic cloth pads, it poses a great threat to the vaginal health. And here we are wasting this resource on make-up!

And let's not forget the ever-growing pile of open garbage is a health hazard too, and adding to it will do no one any favours.

So while the video threatens to gives birth to a trend in the name of women empowerment, we can't help but wonder who exactly will be benefitting with this eccentric make-up hack?
