Canon's new ads make me want to go and hug my mother

What do you expect when you go back home in Diwali? Surprises? Familiarity? Family reunions? Lots of mithai maybe? And some wonderful moments with your family.

Coloured hair may be 'normal' in metro cities. But they are still frowned upon in smaller towns and cities. They become a mark of 'rebellion.'  My red hair made a lot of people cringe. Some even made fun of it.But a smile of admiration and acceptance, even from a stranger can make your 'bold' choice feel pretty awesome. And when that smile comes from your family, it is so much more joyful. And when ma managed to find it pretty after her initial gussa, it was a photo - worthy moments.

Canon India's two ads titled 'Reunion Trips' in association with Makemytrip, are a delight. They are about photo-worthy moments. And with a generation crazy about photos, especially photos by DSLRs, they are bang on. They are about ushering in Diwali with being 'okay' with choices, be it coloured hair or a saree worn with sneakers. They are about both rebellion and acceptance.

And isn't it more so for women?

 And the relationship with mothers is always so complicated- beautiful but complicated. You love them but nothing you do seem to be right or enough for them.

Mother-in-laws! This word is considered to be the shortest horror story by many married women. They have issues with everything they do, imagine how she would react to a short dress or coloured hair? Will you decide not to do what you want to do?

Canon's ads show relationships, one between a mother and daughter and the other between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. In both instances the mothers surprise you with their reaction to a 'bold' choice. And both are moments captured by a Canon camera.

The cool bahu with the even cooler saas

In 30 seconds, it made me smile and made me feel warm.

It breaks the stereotype of mothers-in-law being only prone to finding faults with whatever the bahus do. This saas is in love with her bahu's bold choice.

The mother and daughter who never see eye to eye over anything come together. The daughter takes one step forward by wearing a saree on Diwali and the mother takes another step by being okay with sneakers being worn with the saree.
