6 thoughts that come to my mind when I am in office on the first day of my period

How can I work when my uterus is clearly trying to kill me?

Menstruation is definitely my least favourite word in the world. When Aunty Flo comes knocking, she brings along with her a lot of discomfort and painful cramps. After all, it feels like my uterus is trying to kill me. However, there's something that makes that very uncomfortable time of the month even worse. Coming to office on the first day of my period is beyond infuriating. But, the good thing is that there's an ongoing debate on whether women should be allowed to take a day off on the first day of their periods. And I am absolutely rooting for it.

Tell me honestly, wouldn't you rather curl up in bed with a bowl of ice-cream than sit in office and look at the stupid faces of your not-so-favourite colleagues? Ugh.

While there's an ongoing discourse on the merits of giving women a leave on the first day of their periods, I can't deny the fact that coming to office during that painful time of the month is indeed a tough feat to accomplish. Here are six thoughts that cross my mind when I have to come to work on the first day of my periods:

How Come I Am Still Alive?

More than a thought, this is a casual observation. After all, the painful cramps don't leave me with much choice, you see? It literally feels like someone is repeatedly punching me in my stomach. Those cramps are actually THAT painful. And it isn't just me who's thinks cramps are damn gut-wrenching, medical experts agree with it too.

According to a report published in the Independent, John Guillebaud, professor of reproductive health at University College London, has revealed that period pain can be almost as painful as a heart attack. Imagine!

Why Can't My Office Just Let Me Live In Peace?
With the constant pain in the abdomen, it is absolutely impossible to concentrate on anything. Let alone complete the tasks that have been handed to me by my supervisors. And who wants to work anyway when they are dying?

The minute I enter my office on the first day of my period, all I can think about is: "why I am I even here? I need to be home where my bed is." Also, I end up walking as if I have been stabbed. Not to mention, those discreet interactions I have with my female colleagues to let me know if I have stained my pants or if they have a sanitary napkin or a tampon. Trust me, it feels like I am doing something illegal. Honestly, the way two women pass sanitary products can put any drug mule to shame.

Do I Really Have To Get Up From My Seat?

Every woman will know how it feels when you have to stand up while you are menstruating. The blood gushes out with such intensity that it feels like floodgates have opened. And God forbid if you start sneezing--well, I'm not even gonna go there.

Damn! These Men Have It Easy

I am really jealous of men because they never have to face anything as painful and uncomfortable as periods. They can go on living their lives, while I sit at my desk worried if I have left a stain on my seat. *sigh*

There have been times when I imagine how it would be if men had periods instead of us women. But,  as that's never going to happen, I'll just try to complete my work, while I continue to bleed. Don't mind me, I'm just trying to not pass out from the pain.

My Boss Probably Hates Me. Why Would She Call Me To Office Otherwise?

Have you ever tried to ask for a day off from your boss because you are chumming? Obviously not. Because you know your boss will never give you one. If she's a woman herself, one would hope that she will understand the pain. But, no. Just because she doesn't have those painful cramps, she assumes that no one else does too.

Why Don't They Have Bunk Beds In The Office?

When the pain becomes too much to handle, I often start hallucinating. My desk looks like a bed, the floor looks like a bed, and even the coffee machine looks a bed. I wish there were bunk beds in the office to deal with cramps.

You see every medical room does have one, but you can't deny that there's a higher chance of more than one woman having her period on the same day. How will a rickety bed support two souls who are dying in pain? If only the management understood the complications that comes from bleeding every month.
