Technology has ruined all of us. No, seriously. We are so obsessed with documenting things for the digital space that most of the things we do in real life are solely for pretext. Such as pretending to eat a healthy meal just to post a picture of it on Instagram and going to the gym to click selfies for others to see later.

And that's why we can't keep our hands off our phones, even when we most definitely should. If you too are in the habit of being on your phone all the time, you better get your priorities right. Especially if you do the same while you are working out.

Yup people, tending to your smartphone while exercising is probably not the best idea. In fact, it's doing a lot more harm to you than you realize. Now, before you choose your beloved phone over our sane words, you need to know why you must break-up with your precious device while you are in the gym or just working out at home.

You Can't Reach Your Target Weight
According to a study conducted at Hiram College, USA, phone usage in the gym equates to loss of postural stability. "The researchers say your attention is divided between what you're doing and your phone, which means you're probably not giving each rep a worthy effort," quotes
Health and Fitness Cheat Sheet.

And you have been wondering why you haven't lost any weight.

You Can Injure Yourself
The same study goes onto reveal that if you are in the habit of using your phone in the gym, you are putting yourself at the risk of some grave injury.

"If you're talking or texting on your cellphone while you're putting in your daily steps, your attention is divided by the two tasks, and therefore, possibly predispose individuals to other greater inherent risks such as falls and musculoskeletal injuries," says Michael Rebold, an assistant professor of integrative exercise science at Hiram College, in a press release.

You Are Distracted All The Time
You can give an hour to yourself every day without peeping at your phone, can't you? If yes, then you better start doing it from today. Because being distracted by your smartphone while you are at the gym is just a waste of your time and money.

If you don't keep your phone away, you will find yourself either clicking pictures or scrolling through social media feeds to see what's happening in the world.

It's Not Hygienic
Now, you may probably be wondering what your smartphone has to do with hygiene, right? Well, let us assure you that there's a connection between the two that you don't know about.

When you are in the gym, you are sweating and so are others around you. Not to scare you in any way, but bodily fluids do have the tendency of serving as breeding ground for bacteria. So, when you constantly keep touching your phone while working out or keep it in different places, you are letting your phone serve as a carrier. Once you go home and are all washed up, you forget that your phone is still not clean. But, you begin to use it anyway.

Your Rest Time Increases
Last but not the least, your devil of a phone is not just a distraction but also the reason why you stretch your breaks. Though, you do need some time out in between exhaustive exercise routines and reps, but it should never last more than a few minutes. You don't want your body to cool down and your heart rate to return back to normal mid-session, do you?

However, once you take a break to grab your phone, you often end up staying on it for too long. And you eventually lose track of time.
